SGMC Health is excited to welcome back its annual Volunteen Summer Program, hosting 43 enthusiastic high school students eager to explore the dynamic world of healthcare. This 6-week program offers students an invaluable opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the healthcare field by immersing themselves in various departments within SGMC Health.

Designed to expose students to the inner workings of the health system, the program allows participants to observe the patient care and the administrative support that forms the backbone of daily operations. Students will be placed in diverse departments such as nursing, administration, and imaging, where they will interact with healthcare professionals and learn about their daily responsibilities.

“We are thrilled to welcome our Volunteens to SGMC Health this summer,” said Hilary Willis, Director of Development and Volunteer Services. “This program not only offers these young people a glimpse into the world of healthcare but also the chance to make a positive impact on their community. Their energy and enthusiasm bring fresh perspectives, and we are proud to support their growth and development.”

These young volunteers will assist across the hospital, which in turn helps SGMC Health maintain its high standards of service. This experience will also help them develop essential skills such as communication, teamwork, and professionalism.

“By working alongside our dedicated professionals, these students may discover a love for healthcare that could inspire them to pursue a career in this vital field,” shared Brenda Alexander, Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer. “We look forward to seeing the positive impact they will make over the summer and are excited about the potential future healthcare leaders emerging from this program.”

SGMC Health’s Volunteen Program serves as an example of the importance of volunteerism, career development, and community engagement as the foundation for success. The students’ willingness to learn and serve others showcases a bright future in South Georgia.
