SGMC Health is pleased to welcome Matthew Varn, MD, to the health system. Dr. Varn, a board-certified internal medicine physician, joins SGMC Health as part of the teaching faculty for the Graduate Medical Education Internal Medicine Residency program.
Dr. Varn is deeply connected to the Valdosta community, having been born at SGMC Health and raised in the area. Over the past four years, he has provided both outpatient and inpatient medical care locally, demonstrating his strong commitment to serving his hometown. His lifelong ties and dedication to the region make him a valuable asset to SGMC Health and its patients.
Dr. Varn earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Valdosta State University and his medical degree from Mercer University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Mercer University Internal Medicine program at Navicent Health in Macon, where he served with distinction as Chief Resident. Mercer’s strong commitment to advancing rural healthcare and serving underserved populations has greatly influenced Dr. Varn’s approach to medicine.
“Everyone deserves the best care and I take great pride in knowing that I do everything possible to make this happen,” shared Dr. Varn.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Varn to our residency program faculty,” said Greg Beale, MD, Program Director at SGMC Health. “His expertise, dedication to patient care, and passion for academic medicine align perfectly with our mission to train the next generation of outstanding physicians.”
Dr. Varn expressed his excitement about his new role, saying, “I am honored to join SGMC Health’s residency program faculty and to have the opportunity to contribute to the growth and development of our resident physicians. Teaching and mentoring these doctors is a privilege, and I look forward to helping them achieve excellence in their practice while serving our community.”
Dr. Varn is married to Dr. Jessica Varn, a local dentist, and they have four beautiful daughters. Outside of work, Dr. Varn enjoys fly fishing, programming, and spending quality time with his family and friends.
