SGMC Health’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) program, in collaboration with Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM), presented its annual Internal Medicine Residency Awards to commend exceptional residents and faculty members for their outstanding contributions and achievements.

Resident physicians are licensed medical doctors undergoing advanced training in a specialized field of medicine under the supervision of experienced faculty, gaining hands-on clinical experience to prepare for independent practice.

The 2024 awards ceremony highlighted the dedication and accomplishments of esteemed individuals within the SGMC Health GME community:

  • Intern of the Year: Mariya Tom, MD
  • Outstanding Inpatient Intern: Justin Owens, DO
  • Outstanding Ambulatory Intern: Anna Ledford, MD
  • Resident Growth and Achievement: Anum Munir, MD
  • Junior Resident of the Year: Monica Kovuri, MD
  • Scholarly and Scientific Achievement: Rosaida Silverio, MD

In addition to resident accolades, the ceremony honored Joseph Hayes, MD, who was named Faculty Member of the Year. Dr. Hayes received this prestigious award based on votes from resident physicians, recognizing his exceptional teaching and mentorship throughout their tenure.

SGMC Health embarked on its journey as an academic teaching facility in 2022 with the establishment of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. This program marks a pivotal initiative in SGMC Health’s commitment to advancing medical education and enhancing patient care. Looking ahead, SGMC Health will expand its educational offerings with the introduction of a Transitional Year residency program in July 2025. Furthermore, SGMC Health continues to play a vital role as a clinical teaching site for MUSM’s third and fourth-year medical students, fostering a collaborative environment that promotes learning and innovation.

“We are immensely proud of our residents and faculty members who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and skill in advancing healthcare excellence,” said Pankaj Agrawal, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. “These awards not only celebrate individual achievements but also reflect our collective commitment to nurturing the next generation of healthcare leaders.”
