SGMC Health honored Shane Singletary, RN, with the April DAISY Award for extraordinary nursing. Singletary was recognized for his compassionate end-of-life care.

Singletary was nominated by a patient’s family member who said he went above and beyond the call of duty. The nomination read, “My family had a very emotional day with having to make the difficult decision to stop all life-sustaining measures on my grandmother. She was a fighter and had a difficult time with letting go of her worldly body. After nearly 13 emotional hours of waiting for the passing of my grandmother, my family was beyond exhausted and emotionally spent. Shane came in and treated my family as though we were his family. He called my family by name and gave remarkable care to my grandmother who had been unresponsive for multiple hours. He treated and talked to her as though she understood and responded to every word. He gave comfort medication nearly down to the minute, and he gave us the opportunity to show my grandmother how much she was loved.”

SGMC Health continues to ask patients and fellow employees to honor nurses they feel go above and beyond in their actions and care. Nominations are reviewed by a committee based on criteria that include compassion, teamwork, leadership, attitude, and skills and knowledge.

DAISY awards are presented monthly in front of the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors. Each honoree receives a certificate commending her or him for being an “Extraordinary Nurse.” They also receive a beautiful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa. A special floral arrangement of daisies was generously donated by The Flower Gallery, the local sponsor of SGMC Health’s DAISY Award.
