SGMC Health recently achieved the successful completion of its first transcarotid access Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). This alternative access procedure provides a critical, less invasive option for patients who cannot undergo the standard TAVR through the groin, offering similar outcomes with reduced risk. It was performed by Vascular Surgeon Colby Ruiz, MD, Interventional Cardiologist Luke Seibolt, MD, and Cardiothoracic Surgeon Patrick Murrah, MD.
This milestone comes as SGMC Health recently celebrated the completion of its 100th TAVR procedure, highlighting its dedication to delivering state-of-the-art cardiovascular care.
TAVR is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional open-heart surgery, designed to replace a damaged aortic valve without large chest incisions. This innovative procedure is a lifeline for patients suffering from aortic stenosis, a potentially fatal narrowing of the aortic valve that impairs blood flow from the heart to the body. It offers numerous benefits, including shorter hospital stays—often just overnight—and quicker recovery times, enabling patients to return to their daily lives within weeks.
Dr. Ruiz shared that the procedure expands options for patients who are not candidates for the traditional groin access due to vascular issues or other medical conditions. “By utilizing the carotid artery, we can minimize risk while delivering the same high-quality outcomes, ensuring patients receive the best possible care tailored to their needs,” he said.
Since its first TAVR procedure in May 2022, SGMC Health’s Structural Heart Clinic has become a beacon of hope for patients with aortic valve disease. Under the expert leadership of Dr. Seibolt, Dr. Murrah, and a dedicated team of nursing and imaging specialists, SGMC Health is revolutionizing heart care with a multidisciplinary approach.
“Our goal is to provide every patient with personalized, cutting-edge care,” said Dr. Seibolt. “The introduction of transcarotid TAVR showcases our commitment to innovation and patient-centered care. This alternative access route is a game-changer for those who need it, allowing us to offer life-saving treatments with less risk and faster recovery.”
