SGMC Health Honors Newbern with DAISY Award for Extraordinary Care

Posted on: January 19th, 2024

SGMC Health recognized Adriona Newbern, LPN, with the January DAISY Award for extraordinary nursing care. Newbern was honored for her outstanding communication, unwavering support, and compassionate care for patients at SGMC Primary Care on Kings Way in Valdosta.

Newbern works as the nurse for Laura Guadiana, MD, and was nominated by a long-time patient of theirs. The patient expressed her gratitude for Newbern’s consistent responsiveness to questions, concerns, and needs, typically within the same day for both her and her husband.

“What we appreciate most is that she knows us by name and remembers our medical history and what we are being seen for on that given day,” shared the patient. “Having this type of care is priceless.”

Beyond her routine duties, Newbern has also gone above and beyond to ensure comprehensive care. This includes proactive measures such as calling patients to remind them of necessary injections, following up on referrals without prompting, and ensuring that patients have received their medications.

“Just recently, she called me after hours to follow up on a message I had left her,” shared the patient. “I by no means expect anyone to take time after their workday to follow up with me. But this is just yet another example of the exceptional nurse she is.”

SGMC Health continues to ask patients and fellow employees to honor nurses they feel go above and beyond in their actions and care. Nominations are reviewed by a committee based on criteria that include compassion, teamwork, leadership, attitude, and skills and knowledge.

DAISY awards are presented monthly in front of the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors. Each honoree receives a certificate commending her or him for being an “Extraordinary Nurse.” They also receive a beautiful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa. A special floral arrangement of daisies was generously donated by The Flower Gallery, the local sponsor of SGMC Health’s DAISY Award.
