SGMC Health recently presented Heather Grenat, with its Safe Care Award which honors individuals who play a vital role in ensuring the health system’s unwavering commitment to safety and high reliability principles.
Grenat works in the operating room at SGMC Health’s Smith Northview Campus. She was nominated by a colleague who shared that Grenat’s attention to detail and critical thinking skills prevented a negative outcome.
SGMC Health is currently in the process of becoming a High Reliability Organization (HRO) which embraces a culture of safety and unwavering dedication to quality. The process encourages every member of the health system to become an active participant in the pursuit of reliability, valuing open dialogue about potential risks and concerns.
According to Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Pankaj Agrawal, MD, “While everything went according to the process in this case, Heather took initiative to raise awareness of the situation and question it. This ultimately led to a better experience for the patient and increased awareness of improvements that can be made across the system.”
To be considered for SGMC Health’s Safe Care Award, nominees should possess one or more of the following attributes: Exemplary Adherence to Safety Protocols, Proactive Hazard Identification and Reporting, Continuous Improvement Initiatives, Advocating for Safety Culture, and Mentoring and Knowledge Sharing.
Nominations can be submitted online at sgmc.org/recognition by patients or patients’ family members, colleagues, or managers/directors.
