SGMC Health Expands Trauma Capabilities with Immediate Blood Supply

Posted on: February 4th, 2025
SGMC Health’s Trauma, Emergency Medicine, Laboratory, and Nursing teams showcase the availability of emergent blood in the trauma bay.

SGMC Health is proud to announce a significant advancement in trauma care with the immediate availability of emergent blood in the trauma bay at SGMC Health Main. This new initiative enhances the hospital’s ability to provide rapid, life-saving transfusions to critically injured patients upon arrival, ensuring immediate intervention during medical emergencies.

For trauma patients experiencing severe blood loss, every second is critical. By having emergent blood readily available at the bedside, SGMC Health reduces treatment times and improves patient outcomes in life-threatening situations.

“The ability to provide immediate blood transfusions at the bedside is a game-changer for trauma care,” said Emily Brown, Director of EMS and Trauma. “This initiative aligns with our commitment to delivering the highest level of trauma care, reducing treatment times, and ultimately saving more lives.”

This enhancement builds upon SGMC Health’s designation as a Level III Trauma Center, a distinction awarded by the Georgia Department of Public Health in June 2023. As one of only 10 Level III Trauma Centers in the state, SGMC Health is equipped to provide advanced trauma care starting with emergency response teams in the field and continuing through resuscitation, surgical intervention, and stabilization in the hospital. The trauma program includes 24/7 coverage by skilled surgeons and specialized staff, ensuring immediate and comprehensive care for critically injured patients.

The addition of emergent blood in the trauma bay further strengthens SGMC Health’s commitment to delivering high-quality, life-saving care. By continuously investing in advanced protocols and resources, SGMC Health remains at the forefront of emergency and trauma services in the region.
