SGMC Health and YMCA Offer Safe Sitter Babysitting Class

Posted on: March 21st, 2024
Teens in a 2023 Safe Sitter® class at SGMC Health learn about the principles of CPR

SGMC Health and the Valdosta-Lowndes County YMCA are pleased to offer the Safe Sitter® babysitting course for middle school students in the local community. This initiative aims to equip young teens with essential life and safety skills needed for babysitting, home alone situations, and caring for younger siblings.

Safe Sitter® is a nationally recognized non-profit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive programs tailored to teach middle school students vital life and safety skills. The one-day course incorporates medically accurate training, including hands-on practice in choking rescue and CPR principles, ensuring graduates are equipped to respond effectively during emergencies.

In an effort to empower youth and enhance their caregiving capabilities, SGMC Health will host eight classes over the months of June and July taught by certified Safe Sitter® instructors from the YMCA. Each class will be limited to 20 students and will be priced at $50 per participant.

“The skills learned in this program are an invaluable asset to young teenagers in our community,” shared Kara Hope Hanson, SGMC Health Marketing Manager. “Students walk out of the class with a newfound confidence in their abilities and are better prepared to care for themselves and others if emergencies arise.”

Participants in the Safe Sitter® course will not only learn essential safety and security precautions but will also receive guidance on promoting their babysitting business safely and effectively.

Space is limited and registration is required at www.sgmc.org/safesitter. Instructional workbooks, breakfast, and lunch are included in the cost of the program.
