“I got quite sick recently, so I contacted my PCP, who directed me to the ER. Testing was inconclusive and the medication I was prescribed only helped somewhat, so I saw a specialist the next week. Unfortunately, my symptoms got worse the day after I saw the specialist, and I wasn’t due to follow up with him again for several weeks. I dragged myself to work but could barely function. A coworker told me that Dr. Howe was on call, so I reached out to him in desperation.

True to form, Dr. Howe responded to me quickly and listened with compassionate concern. He agreed to direct admit me. Thankfully I did not end up needing surgery, just more workup and symptom control. Although I know he was busy operating on other patients, Dr. Howe visited as often as he could to facilitate communication. He worked with me to determine the best pain relief and diet options, until we were both satisfied that we had a solid plan. When he discharged me, I felt confident in my next steps.

Throughout my hospitalization, Dr. Howe let me know he was walking the illness journey with me as my advocate. I will be forever grateful that he responded to my suffering with such mercy.”
