South Georgia Medical Center named Alicia Jones, LPN at the SGMC Dogwood Senior Health Center as December’s DAISY winner for excellence in nursing. Jones was nominated by her coworker who described her as polite, professional, compassionate and understanding. “Alicia often sits one on one with patients who are upset or agitated and listens attentively. Recently, she spent hours walking around the unit with a patient who was legally blind and hadn’t slept for days in order to calm him. She is one of the most caring nurses.” Jones has been with SGMC for almost two years. Throughout the health system, SGMC continues to ask patients and fellow employees to honor nurses they feel go above and beyond in their care. Nominations are reviewed by a committee based on criteria that include compassion, teamwork, leadership, attitude, and skills and knowledge. DAISY awards are presented monthly in front of the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors. Each honoree receives a certificate commending him or her for being an “Extraordinary Nurse” and a sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa. The honoree also received a bouquet of fresh daisies and complimentary scrubs from Southern Scrubs and Simply Scrubs. To nominate a nurse forthe DAISY award, visit www.sgmc.org/DAISYaward.
