Transitional Year Residency

About the Program

Welcome to SGMC Health’s Transitional Year Residency Program, where innovation meets compassionate care. At SGMC Health, we are committed to nurturing the next generation of healthcare leaders through comprehensive training, cutting-edge resources, and a supportive community.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Transitional Year residency program is to train a diverse group of physician leaders with a broad foundation of knowledge and clinical skills to provide excellent and compassionate care, innovate change in healthcare systems, and restore health to the community while preparing for advanced residencies and alternate medical careers.

Goals and Objectives

Megan Gallagher, DO, Transitional Year Program Director

The Program aims to provide a broad-based curriculum of graduate medical education in multiple clinical disciplines to prepare residents for advanced residencies or alternate medical careers. It is our intention that residents develop a dedication to the field of medicine and strive to improve themselves and their diverse communities, learn to address and rectify barriers of healthcare inequity and disparity, and encourage both personal and system-wide innovation in healthcare delivery. The transitional year residency at SGMC Health will prepare residents who plan to pursue advanced residencies to provide empathetic, ethical, evidence-based, and cost-effective medical care for their future diverse patient populations and will have a particular focus on serving the rural and medically underserved communities. As a program, we will strive to cultivate resilient physicians who can deliver high quality medical care to their community even in the midst of adversity while continuing to maintain personal health and wellbeing. Further, as an educational environment, the program endeavors to foster scholarly thought to drive clinical innovation, patient safety improvements, and research.

Residents will rotate through inpatient and outpatient internal medicine, critical care, emergency medicine, general surgery, and will have ample time for electives in a vast array of specialties.

Residents will also have the opportunity to hone their procedural training in SGMC Health’s Simulation Lab.
