Portion of Cowart Street to be Closed for SGMC Construction

Posted on: January 6th, 2012

Beginning Monday January 9, 2012, a section of Cowart Street will be closed for approximately six months during which time SGMC will be constructing a new generator building. The generator building will be located to the east of the new parking deck adjacent to the rear of the cafeteria. It will house diesel generators that will provide emergency power for the existing SGMC facilities as well as the new patient tower. According to Chief Planning Officer Bill Forbes, it is necessary to close this section of Cowart Street to allow proper work space for the contractors and assure the safety of hospital patients, visitors and staff.“We understand this construction will cause some additional traffic congestion and we ask the community for patience and understanding,” said Forbes. “Vehicles can enter Cowart Street from Ashley Street with no problems.  Emergency department patients and outpatients can access the facility from Ashley Street, Woodrow Wilson Drive or Slater Street.  Patients receiving services at the Surgery Center or Professional Building can enter the parking areas for those facilities from Patterson; however, the road will be blocked just past the Surgery Center driveway. We ask that you please plan your routes on and off the SGMC campus with this closure in mind.”SGMC’s existing generator plant is over 25-years old. The new plant will increase our capability of generating the horsepower necessary to run our critical systems in an emergency power outage. For more information, contact SGMC Community Relations at 229-259-4420.
