Myrna Ballard, President, Valdosta- Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce Valdosta, Ga. – Myrna Ballard, President of the Valdosta- Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce, recently completed the cardiovascular business shadowing program at South Georgia Medical Center. Ballard is the first business leader in the community to complete this program. This program gives business leaders the unique opportunity to shadow and observes SGMC’s Cardiovascular Team first hand at the SGMC Dasher Memorial Heart Center.

By scrubbing in and watching actual cases from behind-the-scenes, Ballard was able to learn about the daily miracles performed at SGMC by the experienced and skilled multidisciplinary team. She was able to observe the daily routines of the cardiovascular team in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, the cardiovascular operating room, and the cardiac intensive care unit. “I had no idea these types of complex cardiovascular procedures were being performed right here in Valdosta, Georgia,” said Ballard. “This experience was a very enlightening opportunity.”As the program continues to grow, SGMC plans to offer shadowing opportunities to business leaders in neighboring communities.

SGMC Community Relations Director Laura Love said, “This is a great opportunity to educate members of the business community on the significant resources available at the Medical Center.”As the only open-heart surgery center in south central Georgia, the SGMC Dasher Memorial Heart Center, a modern state-of-the-art facility, is home to a comprehensive cardiac and vascular surgery program. A team of five highly-skilled cardiologists, two cardiothoracic surgeons, and a vascular and endovascular surgeon provide larger numbers of complex procedures and apply vast experiences and skills to provide expert care.

“I was so impressed with the Cardiothoracic Surgeons, the Vascular/Endovascular Surgeon, affiliated Cardiologists, and nursing staff with their accessibility,” said Ballard.
