Breast Changes

Whether you are breastfeeding or bottle feeding, you can expect some breast changes after your baby is born. If you are breastfeeding, on the second or third postpartum day, your breasts may begin to feel hard, tender, swollen and warm to the touch. To reduce discomfort, follow these suggestions.

Breastfeeding Suggestions:
Breastfeed your baby often
Wear a supportive bra 24-hours a day
Apply warm, moist towels to your breasts before feedings
Hand express some milk to soften the areola after using moist heat
Use cool compresses on your breasts after feeding to relieve the discomfort and swelling

Bottle-feeding Suggestions:
Wear a supportive bra 24-hours a day
Avoid warm or hot showers (stand with back to shower)
Avoid breast stimulation; do not pump your breasts
Take your pain medication to decrease the discomfort
