Monday marked an important event in SGMC’s history as nearly 60 members of the Epic team gathered for orientation. The team will be responsible for developing and implementing SGMC’s new electronic health record (EHR) system, known as Epic. Epic is a healthcare software company that was founded in 1979. To date, 190 million patients in the US and around the world have a current electronic record in Epic.

Epic’s fully integrated system encompasses not only clinical information, but also registration, patient scheduling and billing. Epic offers the combination of usability and features that allow the EHR system to eventually be shared by our entire health care community. Epic has won numerous industry awards, regularly tops the list of best EHR systems in surveys, and is used by the Cleveland Clinic, Allina, Kaiser Permanente, the Mayo Clinic and others.

The following quote by Judith McNaught was shared with the project team, “You can’t outwit fate by trying to stand on the sidelines and place little side bets about the outcome of life. Either you wade in and risk everything to play the game, or you don’t play at all. And if you don’t play, you can’t win.” The project team stepped from the sidelines and entered this implementation with the intent to win.
