Consolidation of Labor and Delivery Services
The Hospital Authority of Valdosta-Lowndes County, Georgia is implementing the joint recommendations of the Pediatric Service of the Medical Staff of the SGMC Main Campus and the Pediatric Service of the SGMC Smith Northview Campus to consolidate the provision of Pediatric Services to newborn in a single location.
Effective Monday, November 10, 2014 at 7am, labor and delivery services will only be available at the SGMC Main Campus.
Brian Griner, MD, Chief of Medical Staff, himself a pediatrician, says, "I welcome the patients from the SGMC Smith Northview Campus and look forward to continuing to provide excellent service to the pediatric patients in the region from the SGMC Main Campus location."
According to Dr. Thomas H. Moseley, Jr., Chief of the Medical Staff Obstetrics/Gynecology Service, "The consolidation of services will give SGMC the chance to develop a true Women's Center with separate access and waiting areas. It will also create the opportunity to expand and upgrade our Labor, Delivery and Recovery and post-partum facilities, as well as, upgrading our nursery so that more of our premature babies can stay home and not be sent to other hospitals."
SGMC's Chief Medical Officer Kimberley Megow, MD says, "While this is a change for our community, I believe the long term benefits will outweigh the short-term challenges. Utilization of a single location for labor and delivery service will greatly improve efficiency of the provision of pediatric services to newborns."
A team is currently working on transition details. SGMC CEO Randy Sauls reports that all 27 employees currently assigned to labor and delivery services at the Smith Northview Campus will be transitioned to the consolidation services at the main campus.
